SURVEY RESULTS
In the aftermath of two recent college campus shooting incidents (Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University), we asked our visitors for their opinions regarding what can be done to make university and college campuses, and also public schools, safer places to be. Below are their responses to our four survey questions.

Click on each survey question below to see the responses.

Question One:
What do you think can be done to make students and faculty safer on university and college campuses?

Question Two:
What do you think can be done to make students and teachers safer in our nation's public schools (elementary and secondary schools)?

Question Three:
What are the likely outcomes of further gun control laws?

Question Four:
What types of new legislation, if any, are desirable to help make schools and college campuses safer places?

Question One:
What do you think can be done to make students and faculty safer on university and college campuses?

Allow legal CCW teachers and students to be ready to respond. Now "Gun Free " means that every body is a victim. The criminals don't seem to obey sign.
Jack K., Medford, NJ

Let students and faculty obtain permits to carry.
Philip S., Borden IN

Well trained security that understands that complacency kills. Allow individuals who are trained, to care concealed weapons.
Keith H., Levittown, PA

Increased training for security personnel and hire more security.  Security should be visible.  I do not think that banning firearms is the answer, since someone who is intent on harming or killing others will ignore a firearms ban.  I think that students should receive instruction in personal safety as part of freshman orientation.
William M., Lakewood, WA

Allowing anyone who has a concealed weapons permit to carry their weapons on campus.
Ellen C., Peoria, AZ

1. Enforce existing laws;
2. Properly punish those who break our laws; and
3. Allow law-abiding citizens the unrestricted right to carry a firearm for personal protection.
John D., Miami, FL

Allow concealed weapons both students and faculty.
Dr. Stephen C., Battle Ground, WA

Allow CCW with proper training."
Joel C., Ripon, CA

Allow persons with carry permits to take their guns on campus and in class.  Once it becomes known that there may be armed men and women in class and on campus I doubt that nut cased like the ones mentioned will feel that they can do there will with impunity.  They are looking to kill people not participate in a gun fight.  You never see these things happen at a gun show.
Fred A., Stuart, FL

Allow Students/Faculty with Concealed Carry permits to carry. Period!
Kerry Y., Concord, NC

Change the laws to allow CC on campus
Ruben M., Claremore, OK

Allow students/teachers with concealed carry permits to carry on campus.
Alan B., Holden, ME

Nothing
Joe T., Palm Bay, FL

1. Utilize better pysch background checks on students and facility.  This may require legal action to deal with "privacy" issues that interfere with meaningful investigations.
2. Allow licensed individuals to carry weapons, as permitted by their licenses, on campuses and in other public gatherings.  Publicly announce this to notify anyone considering a mass shooting type of event would be aware that this is NOT a "gun-free zone".
Neal G., Lawrenceville, GA

Allow people with Concealed carry permits to carry on campus and in the classroom.
Ed H., Quincy, FL

Two things...education around the legal aspect of a "gun free zone" essentially takes the right for self protection away from the individual and places it on the entity that made the rule. That liability must be answered.
Secondly, there should be a stringent volunteer program for faculty and students to train on concealed carry (more than a basic screen).
Lee D., Denver, CO

Allow Concealed Carry on site by properly trained and licensed students.
Jim R., Sicklerville, NJ

allow CCW on campus
John F., Hazlet, NJ

Allow Students to conceal carry firearms to protect them selves.
John C., Philadelphia, PA

This question is incredibly broad.  Faculty and students are a reflection of our society...a significant portion of which has become desensitized to violence.  Unless they are related to victims, most people are reluctant to express real outrage at violent behavior...the kind of outrage that would provoke a change in our society.  I do not want to turn our campuses into forts with armed guards.  But I do recommend allowing the willing faculty and staff to carry concealed weapons providing they comply with all licensing/permit requirements for concealed carry within the state where the school is located.
Denny F., Chandler, AZ

More psych evaluations.  Teaching people how to recognize and deal with trouble.  Teach people self defense.
Joseph V., Aldan PA

Allow students and teachers to carry concealed firearms
Jack P., South Jordan, UT

First, a mandatory class each year to remind students at the beginning of the school year to be vigilant.  Teach/remind them of dangerous situations and best ways to avoid them (not just crazy shooters, but things like walking alone through a park in the dark...common sense stuff to avoid trouble), danger signs to look for whether just criminal/violent behavior or signs of emotional stress or mental illness.  Have a solid outreach program at each school/college for troubled students as well as hard-core professional services.  Teachers taught to better understand and look for troubling behaviors.  Also, classrooms should all have equivalent of a silent alarm for emergency situations, reinforced doors that could be employed when needed on each classroom in order to keep students safe.  Also, teachers should be allowed/encourage to carry concealed weapons for the safety of their class.  Finally, as the airlines have Air Marshals, we should enact the same principle in schools...(granted, might be a little harder in an elementary or high school, but might work for colleges/universities) might give a potential crazy pause if it was possible that not only the teacher could be armed, but perhaps someone else in the class was armed with their whole purpose to just wait for someone to pull a weapon so they could react.  However, if a student is of legal age and meets all requirements of an individual state, no reason they should not be able to carry a concealed weapon to be able to defend themselves...although no, I'm not looking for wild-west mentality.  All campuses should also employ sensor technology such as Shot Spotter that can detect and locate a gun shots in order to provide for a faster response by a "ready" rapid response team.  Evidently in today's world, perhaps campuses need their own SWAT teams...
Reggie S., Front Royal, VA

Let them arm themselves, if they so choose.
Lynne S., Paducah, KY

Allow permitted teachers and student to carry a cw. This solution does not require one to have a PHD!
Sam S., Ponca City, OK

Let lawfully licensed and trained students, faculty, and staff carry concealed weapons.  The knowledge that a potential shooter is no longer in a "Gun-free Zone" should make them thing long and hard if he/she really wants to go up against the "sheepdogs."
A.R. "Mac" M., Gainesville, GA

I feel that a persons right to carry should be allowed everywhere public unless there are enough armed guards to deter such action. One person carrying a weapon of self defense in the right place could have stopped either one of these shootings. We advertise to criminals that everyone entering campus must be unarmed. If you want to inflict as much damage as possible, you will go where people are defenseless.
Lance P., Orem, UT

Allow concealed carry for anyone licensed to carry, staff, students, and visitors.  The only other alternative is to turn the universities into a compound and have security screen everyone entering the "compound".  That is not really an alternative for learning in the US.
Rodney S., Sanford, FL

After undergoing psychological testing, law abiding citizens and students at college universities must be allowed to carry.
Craig G., Trenton, NJ

Have a larger and more prominent security force AND allow students to arm themselves for self defense.
Nick G., Tavares, FL

Arm those professors and students who wish to get their permit to carry and take a advanced course in self protection.
Ray H., Jackson, TN

Allow students and faculty to carry concealed.
Kurt G., Pemberton, NJ

Allow students and faculty that have a concealed weapon license to carry on campus!
It is first our GOD given right and our 2nd amendment right to protect ourselves and others who need it, Why should that right end where the school property begins!
David R., Coeur d'Alene, ID

The allowing of CCW carriers whether it be faculty or students on campus at any time.
Thaddeus Z., Edgewater Park, NJ

Be aware of your surroundings. Learn and carry some sort of defensive weapon.
Eric J., Scottsdale, AZ

I'm in favor of CCW permitted faculty being allowed to carry and also for CCW students who are on an open campus.
Daniel G., Fallon, NV

Allow law abiding students / citizens who possess a valid concealed carry permit to carry their firearms on campus.  All it would take would be for one good guy with a gun to put a .45 in the back of the bad guys head! Our schools are 'gun free zones' the only people who comply with this are the already law abiding citizens who are no threat at all.  Bad guys love gun free zones because that means that they will be the only one with a gun amongst a bunch of helpless sheep.
Randy M., Kentwood, MI

I work for a major university. We have are own police department. Considering the size of the campus, It is impossible to be everywhere at once. However, They may want to consider having armed security or Police if possible, at all large gatherings. Be it lectures, testing sites or seminars. A constant police presence would most likely be a deterrent for the amateur, would be shooter.
Bernard S., Pittstown, NJ

Armed campus police, concealed weapons by faculty, concealed weapons by adult students.
Frank M., Cedar Falls, IA

1. Student dress code.
2. Metal detectors in all usable entrances.
3. Automatic alert/security systems in classrooms.
4.  Classrooms that can be securely sealed.
5.  Hallways that can be sealed.
6.  Select faculty and student body that are allowed to be armed (this to be known only to the security manager)
Alan J., Roan Mountain, TN

Stop barring the lawful carry of concealed weapons. Note that I did not say "permit" carry, rather "stop" barring carry.
C.M.N., Farmington Hills, MI

Allow concealed carry for students and faculty.
Allen F., Omaha, NE

Allow qualified people the tools to defend themselves, concealed firearms, etc.
William J., New York, NY

Colleges and universities should deploy more armed security officers in civilian clothes at least in every building where there are crowds of students and faculties or where there are people, to say the least. It is important that these armed officers be in civilian clothes so that they are not threatening and could be around students and faculties at all times.
Edgar C., Syosset, NY

Allow concealed carry permit holders to carry on any campus or school grounds.
Tad W., Payson, UT

The faculty and staff should be able to carry concealed.  It would also be safer to allow students to carry.  Classes should be taught in self defense and especially the use and carry of handguns.
Larry B., Lawrence, KS

Metal Detectors, and more armed campus police
Vic S., Orofino, ID

Arm everybody and train them how and when to shoot bad people.
C.R.W., Montgomery, AL

Teach classes on self defense and allow faculty and students to carry concealed on campus.
Roger B., Cheyenne, WY

In a post-modern and free society risk will always be present. Not much else can be done without interfering with our individual rights.
David D., Navasota, TX

Allow CCW, armed security guards.
Joe F., Freehold, NJ

Have teacher and admin carry gun only after they have taken the required courses.
Michael D., Forest Grove, OR

Allow both groups to apply for a concealed weapon permit and if they qualify, let them be armed.
Billy B., Roswell, NM

I am not sure that anything can be done.  When there is a person committed to mass murder and has no intention of surviving, it cannot be prevented.  If concealed carry was allowed then the extent of the damage might be limited by early intervention by what could have been a victim.
Steve C., Springdale, AR

Allow concealed carry by responsible and competent individuals
David M., Stoughton, MA

Concealed carry on campus for students and faculty.  More campus security.  "Open campus" may not be a real good idea.
James Z., Waukegan, IL

Armed Guards
Mike B., Tulsa, OK

Have their own security team. A team that carries a side arm with access to automatic weapons. Maybe a metal detector at all entrances.
T.C., Souderton, PA

First and foremost, people must be encouraged and enabled to protect themselves.  This includes allowing faculty, staff, and students to be armed.  The experience of the Israeli schools proves that armed teachers make safe schools.
Bill L., Beaver, PA

allow ccw
Jeff Y., Charlotte, NC

Allow properly qualified and licensed individuals to carry concealed weapons if they so desire.
David W., Orlando, FL

allow any one with a concealed weapons or handgun license to carry in these areas.
Tom W., Dallas, TX

armed campus police and metal detectors at all entry points on buildings. I would not think that the students would be able to be armed as most are under 21.
Adam W., Morris, NY

stop the media from making the shooter a celebrity
Dale S., Fort Stockton, TX

Allow them to qualify for and then obtain a concealed carry license/permit to protect themselves with a weapon according to our 2nd Amendment right to bear arms for personal protection.  An nut that anticipates attacking people on a college campus (or anywhere else for that matter) will think long and hard before attacking people who have the means and will to fight back.
Daniel B., Zanesville, OH

Enforce existing gun laws
Rodney H., New Bern, NC

Armed personal available throughout all campuses. The right of the students to protect themselves by being allowed to have concealed weapons because no one is more responsible for their safety then themselves. Police have guns to protect themselves and the students and faculty but bottom line is they are not responsible for student lives on campus when they are not there so let the students protect themselves because there lives are as important as any police officers and politicians life
Vlatko R., Wayne, NJ

Allow qualified Law-Abiding citizens the right to carry on campus for self-defense
Bruce G., King of Prussia, PA

Allow trained teachers to carry firearms..
George H., Edison, NJ

Allow concealed carry on school property
James J., Douglassville, PA

Security awareness & self-defense classes for students; broader use of security cameras; legal prosecution of infractions
Robert S., Tulsa, OK

Competent, armed personnel, including qualified adult students with CCW permits.
Massad A., Live Oaks, FL

allow ccw permit holders to carry on university and college campuses
Steve C., Atwater, OH

Allow CCW by licensed permit holders (if permit is required in that state).
Enforce existing laws to keep violent criminals out of society.
Patrick M., Chicopee, MA

Most importantly allow licensed carry citizens to carry on campus.  Have security and police more visible inside public buildings.  Question suspicious or "non-student" looking people.  Teach students and staff to be aware of surroundings and work through different scenarios in their minds to be prepared.  Have emergency plans in place.
Chris K., Pitman, NJ

As you know I am in Utah. I can carry concealed in the state college and universities and in the public schools. Others could look to Utah for an example on this.
Lynn B., Ogden, UT

Allow permit holders to carry guns on campus.
Ray H., Jackson, TN

Allow personal defense carry on all campuses
Teach personal defense courses on campus
Limit class access to one or two doors
David D., Brookville, PA

Allow CC by those students and facilty who are qualified and licenced. Also more armed security guards.
Jay R., Portland, OR

Approve concealed carry license holders to do so on campus.  Failing that, the following should help:
1.  Armed security in every classroom
2.  Metal detectors at the entrances to every campus/building
3.  Armed security in every dormitory
Stephen H., Sarasota, FL

Allow CCW, arm responsible teachers and students. Get rid of gun free zones!!
Joe E., Howell, NJ

Question Two:
What do you think can be done to make students and teachers safer in our nation's public schools (elementary and secondary schools)?

Allow legal CCW teachers and students to be ready to respond. Now "Gun Free " means that every body is a victim. The criminals don't seem to obey sign.
Jack K., Medford, NJ

Let teachers get legal permits and carry.
Philip S., Borden, IN

Well trained security that understands that complacency kills.
Keith H., Levittown, PA

Increased security would be most helpful with uniformed police officers present whenever school is in session.  Teachers should be trained to look for signs of potentially violent students.
William M., Lakewood, WA

Allowing anyone who has a concealed weapons permit to carry their weapons on campus.
Ellen C., Peoria, AZ

1. Enforce existing laws;
2. Properly punish those who break our laws; and
3. Allow law-abiding citizens the unrestricted right to carry a firearm for personal protection.
John D., Miami, FL

Allow concealed carry both Admin and Faculty.
Dr. Stephen C., Battle Ground, WA

Better training for teachers as to what to look out for. Allow teachers to express their concerns to the authorities if need be.
Joel C., Ripon, CA

In elementary school where there are younger people.  The students of course would not be armed, but trained carry permit holders in the faculty should be armed for the same reason as above.
Fred A., Stuart, FL

Allow Teachers/Faculty with Concealed Carry permits to carry. Period!
Kerry Y., Concord, NC

Allow CC on campus
Ruben M., Claremore, OK

Allow students/teachers with concealed carry permits to carry on campus.
Alan B., Holden, ME

Nothing.
Joe T., Palm Bay, FL

1. Increase police presence. Make sure that this would be fully trained and authorized officers and not "meter maids".
2. Maintain a tighter control on the comings and goings of students to avoid trips off-campus and entry during irregular hours.
3. Enforce strict controls on non-students access to the campus.
(This doesn't quite jive with the concept of freedom of speech, action, etc. but it would enhance the freedom to live.
Neal G., Lawrenceville, GA

Allow people with Concealed carry permits to carry on campus and in the classroom.
Ed H., Quincy, FL

Volunteer program amongst faculty for a stringent concealed carry. Include a pay differential for those that can maintain the mental/fitness/skill levels necessary.
Also, require in zoning laws an assessment of what should be built into a school to make it more flexible for law enforcement to disrupt a hostage situation. Should they all be Beslan-proof?
Lee D., Denver, CO

Education of teachers to be able to recognize and handle possible emotional issues, just like they are supposed to be trained to handle child abuse symptoms.  It's either that or metal detectors
Jim R., Sicklerville, NJ

allow trained and qualifies  teachers with CCW permits to carry on school property.
John F., Hazlet, NJ

Allow teachers to conceal carry firearms to protect them selves.

Allow teachers, administrators and other adult employees to carry concealed firearms
Jack P., South Jordan, UT

Some of the same stuff... teach awareness to students and staff, advocacy programs, better training for teachers in recognizing certain behaviors.  I hate to say it, but for elementary and secondary schools, perhaps metal detectors/airport type security systems might be the way to go.  Perhaps go with "Air Marchas"-type folks intermingled within the faculty population.  I elementary or high-school would be much easier to control and create a security environment than an entire university campus.  It all takes money though.
Reggie S., Front Royal, VA

Arm the teachers.
Lynne S., Paducah, KY

Allowed permitted teachers to carry a cw
Sam S., Ponca City, OK

Eliminate "Gun-free Zones" at our public schools and permit lawfully licensed and trained faculty and staff carry concealed weapons.  Most police departments don't have the manpower to include highly visible, armed police officers, so perhaps an auxiliary of parents or other concerned citizens could be used.
A.R. "Mac" M., Gainesville, GA

I am going to college to become a teacher. I will break the law on the rule of not being able to carry a self defense weapon. I am a Scoutmaster as well and it says in the handbook not to carry a weapon but in my eyes, those kids are in my care and it is not only my right but my obligation to protect them while in my care.
Lance P., Orem, UT

Make concealed carry an option for all staff members, screened volunteers, and security.
Rodney S., Sanford, FL

putting more metal detectors in schools.
Craig G., Trenton, NJ

Have a larger and more prominent security force on site every day, seven days a week.
Nick G., Tavares, FL

All teachers who wish, to carry concealed after taking a course to get their permit. Also require that they spend so many rounds of practice each month.
Ray H., Jackson, TN

Allow teachers to carry concealed weapons.
Kurt G., Pemberton, NJ

responsibly armed staff and security personnel.
David R., Coeur d'Alene, ID

Armed guards and faculty, greater police presence. Not too long ago guns weren't so taboo. There was a time when there were shooting teams. Kids under adult supervision would compete against each other shooting 22 rifles.
Thaddeus Z., Edgewater Park, NJ

Again, awareness of your surroundings. Teachers should learn about using a weapon. Report any strange actions by any one.
Eric J., Scottsdale, AZ

I support CCW permitted faculty being allowed to carry on campus. All rooms should have panic alarms to alert the office and law enforcement personnel.

Lock down during school hours, metal detectors at every entrance facility, random searches of lockers and persons.
Bernard S., Pittstown, NJ

Concealed weapons by faculty and staff.
Frank M., Cedar Falls, IA

1. Start teaching citizenship and American responsibilities as a citizen again in all classes.
2.  Lock down all entrance doors and have access doors monitored continuously (included metal detectors with automatic lockdown in the entrance area where detector is located.)
3.  Have selected faculty armed (this must not be revealed to anyone except the security manager)
Alan J., Roan Mountain, TN

Stop barring the lawful carry of concealed weapons.
C.M.N., Farmington Hills, MI

Allow CCW for faculty
Allen F., Omaha, NE

Allow qualified teachers and faculty the tools to defend themselves, concealed firearms, etc.
William J., New York, NY

Elementary and secondary schools should have armed security officers in civilian clothes, too. Not as many as in universities and colleges but at least two or three on duty every time there are students and teachers in the school. Plus have all the teachers and administrators attend a personal defense training and let the school district decide whether or not, to put a properly secured and concealed weapon in each classroom, transparent to the students (especially in high schools).
Edgar C., Syosset, NY

Allow concealed carry permit holders to carry on any campus or school grounds.
Tad W., Payson, UT

Teachers in elementary and especially secondary school should be encouraged to carry concealed.  Security officers should be carrying also
Larry B., Lawrence, KS

Take a stronger stance against bullying and teasing
Vic S., Orofino, ID

Arm faculty and train them how and when to shoot bad people.
C.R.W., Montgomery, AL

Allow faculty to carry concealed and utilize undercover security.  Uniformed officers only keep the honest kids honest.  The dishonest ones will always find a way to circumvent the obvious.
Roger B., Cheyenne, WY

Mandatory attendance at all public schools should be eliminated. A competitive system should be established where those students who feel that education is important should vie for openings. Those who do not wish to be educated should become part of the labor workforce. This competitive system would eliminate much of the anger felt by kids trapped in a world that they do not wish to be a part of.
David D., Navasota, TX

Allow CCW for Teachers and Administrators.  Our Local HS has PD presence every day.
Joe F., Freehold, NJ

Have teacher and admin carry gun only after they have taken the required courses.
Michael D., Forest Grove, OR

Allow all faculty to be trained in handling guns and apply for a concealed weapon permit and then be in a position to protect the students if an emergency arises.
Billy B., Roswell, NM

Concealed carry by trained teachers.  The only alternative would be armed guards at every corner in all of the buildings.
Steve C., Springdale, AR

Not a lot
David M., Stoughton, MA

I would prefer teachers have firearm and martial arts training.  If not, then lock the doors and hire more security guards.
James Z., Waukegan, IL

Armed Guards
Mike B., Tulsa, OK

Rent-a-cops with side arms, and metal detectors at all entrances.
T.C., Souderton, PA

Teachers must be encouraged and legally allowed to carry guns to protect the children in their charge.  Furthermore, older children should also be permitted to be armed.
Bill L., Beaver, PA

enforce existing gun laws
Jeff Y., Charlotte, NC

Allow properly qualified and licensed teachers and staff to carry concealed weapons if they so desire.
David W., Orlando, FL

allow any one with a concealed weapons or handgun license to carry in these areas.
Tom W., Dallas, TX

All NYC schools have unarmed school safety officers already in place, you can send them to the police academy for handgun training and arm them quickly.
Adam W., Morris, NY

stop the media from making the shooter a celebrity
Dale S., Fort Stockton, TX

Station trained security guards within the schools.  Teach children how to deal with disasters such as an armed assailant, tornadoes, hurricanes and other natural disasters.
Daniel B., Zanesville, OH

Enforce existing gun laws
Rodney H., New Bern, NC

To allow the teachers to carry guns to school so when some idiot kid decides that life is no longer worth it he shod be stooped immediately instead of waiting for the police to arrive to save the day and have 30, 40, 50 kids and teachers dead by the time they arrive. In some cases they can put in place armed personal for protection. Bottom line is that when a suicidal kid comes to a school with a gun that he is going to get regardless of gun control and you don't have one he wins and you are dead and many around you
Vlatko R., Wayne, NJ

Allow qualified (law-abiding citizen) teachers the right to carry for the purpose of self defense and protection of students.
Bruce G., King of Prussia, PA

Allow trained teachers to carry firearms, providing the teachers are willing and are trained by police or other law enforcement agencies
George H., Edison, NJ

Change the gun free zone and allow licensed CCW on school property.
James J., Douglassville, PA

Security awareness & self-defense classes for students; broader use of security cameras; legal prosecution of infractions
Robert S., Tulsa, OK

Armed protection already in place, rather than reactively summoned.
Massad A., Live Oaks, FL

allow ccw permit holders to carry in public schools
Steve C., Atwater, OH

Allow teachers / school officials to CCW if so desired. Change philosophy from "run and hide" mentality to "fight back" mentality to provide less than optimal arena for criminals to perform violent acts.
Patrick M., Chicopee, MA

I feel teachers should be able to carry concealed and only on their person, deep conceal. Also that it needs to be kept quite. I don't tell anyone, not even coworkers, that I carry. Same for the education environment. Only person(s) that should know that the school personnel are carrying are the “necessary” law enforcement of a higher education institution or the principal in smaller settings where there is no law enforcement element on the campus.
Lynn B., Ogden, UT

Allow permit holders to carry guns on campus.
Ray H., Jackson, TN

Allow teachers with carry permits to carry on premises;  offer staff personal defense training
David D., Brookville, PA

Allowing CC by (qualified & licenced) teachers, and other school employees.
Also some type of armed security on campus. In Oregon our solution (at least in Portland) is to "lock down" the school in a emergency.
Jay R., Portland, OR

Approve concealed carry license holders to do so on campus.  Failing that, the following should help:
1.  Armed security in every classroom
2.  Metal detectors at the entrances to every campus/building
3.  Armed security in every dormitory
Stephen H., Sarasota, FL

Armed security and teachers with CCW should be able to carry firearms in these schools.
Joe E., Howell, NJ

Question Three:
What are the likely outcomes of further gun control laws?

More victims. but then again isn't that what politicians want. Then they can rescue us with more laws that the criminals don't obey. Look at who we elect. Unfortunately we are seeing the results. Wake up America!
Jack K., Medford, NJ

More crime
Philip S., Borden, IN

Only criminals will have weapons.
Keith H., Levittown, PA

Additional gun control is unlikely to help.
William M., Lakewood, WA

More law-abiding citizens not being able to protect themselves.  People are murdered with weapons other than guns.
Ellen C., Peoria, AZ

More crime against innocent, unarmed people.
John D., Miami, FL

More "Gun Free Zones" more KILLINGS.
Dr. Stephen C., Battle Ground, WA

The laws needed are already in place, just need to follow up and use them properly.
Joel C., Ripon, CA

The gun control laws obviously are not working, except to assure these nut cases that they will meet no resistance.  Why would anyone with a grain of sense think that more laws would improve the situation?
Stuart A., Stuart, FL

Increased violence everywhere.
Kerry Y., Concord, NC

Allow CC on campus
Ruben M., Claremore, OK

Fewer responsible citizens able to protect themselves
Alan B., Holden, ME

I'm sure the Libs & Pols will want to pass some useless feel good STUFF!
Joe T., Palm Bay, FL

Unknown, but if the Democrats get back in power, there very well may be a return to the idiocy of the Bill Clinton era.  And that's scary!
Neal G., Lawrenceville, GA

There should be none, what part of "congress shall make no laws" don't the understand.
Ed H., Quincy, FL

More attacks.
Lee D., Denver, CO

The inability of a armed population to protect themselves and their loved ones and the abolishment of the 2nd Amendment.
Jim R., Sicklerville, NJ

Just make it easier for the bad guy
John F., Hazlet, NJ

I believe they will pass stricter gun control measures. Which will do nothing, except enable criminals to carry out their crimes unrestricted on unarmed citizens.
John C., Philadelphia, PA

Effectively nothing!  The NRA will express outrage and will lobby the US Congress to neuter any changes in federal gun control laws.  As a result, meaningful change will never pass and people will continue to die needlessly.
Denny F., Chandler, AZ

Less people who follow the law with weapons.  No difference in criminals getting them.
Joseph V., Aldan, PA

As a society we will become less safe.  Only criminals and human predators will have firearms.
Jack P., South Jordan, UT

I'm not certain the problem is guns.  The problem would appear to be people.  Ok, in the case of the VA Tech, perhaps we could look at tightening up the system related to mental illness and/or treatments and ability to buy guns.  However, guns don't kill people...people kill people.  If not a gun, say a truck full of fertilizer.... They didn't use guns in Oklahoma City.  The 9/11 terrorists didn't use guns, they used box cutters and airplanes.  Bottom line is that other than tightening up the current laws related to mental illness and those already on the books, not sure further gun control laws would change anything, except perhaps keep somebody from protecting themselves when a crazy starts shooting at them or others.
Reggie S., Front Royal, VA

An attempt to totally disarm the general public...
Lynne S., Paducah, KY

More shootings/killings of the defenseless!
Sam S., Ponca City, OK

Only the criminals will have guns if we are not careful, or if we listen to the gun control proponents.
A.R. "Mac" M., Gainesville, GA

I do not understand how people can remotely think that if they outlaw guns there won't be anymore guns to commit crimes. If I am not mistaken drugs are illegal and have been for a long time and we still haven't seem to fix this problem.
Lance P., Orem, UT

Gun control laws are not working and further restrictions will not improve security.
Rodney S., Sanford, FL

you continue to strip away the right to carry for law abiding citizens
Craig G., Trenton, NJ

Only the sickos and criminals will be armed, while the innocent law abiding citizen will be at their mercy.
Nick G., Tavares, FL

It will strip law abiding citizens of their guns leaving criminals and cops as the only ones who have them.
Ray H., Jackson, TN

More school massacres.
Kurt G., Pemberton, NJ

More crimes using guns, The "libs" are really ignorant to think outlawing guns would be a solution, I mean, Boy, Its a good thing that Meth is illegal cause now its nowhere to be found, huh!
David R., Coeur d'Alene, ID

More and more innocent law biding Americans are losing what our four fathers fought so hard to defend "Our Freedom". I live in New Jersey and I have been stripped of most of my gun rights. I'm right outside Philadelphia I read about shooting in my town and surrounding towns. I have committed no crimes go to work everyday at a "school district" and have a family and I am not able to carry a gun to protect myself and my loved ones. What will happen is what has been happening. Innocent people will keep being injured and killed because they do not have the right to defend themselves with the same weapon they are being harmed with.
Thaddeus Z., Edgewater Park, NJ

We do not need further gun control. This will take our chances for protection out of our hands. Law breakers will always get weapons no matter what. If they know we are armed the chances of being attacked are lowered.
Eric J., Scottsdale, AZ

Further gun control laws are useless. They're not reinventing anything.  Teens committing violent crimes should be charged as adults
Daniel G., Fallon, NV

Crime and criminals will flourish even more.
Randy M., Kentwood, MI

The future is unwritten.
Bernard S., Pittstown, NJ

More crime because criminals will know no one is armed to stop them.
Frank M., Cedar Falls, IA

They will continue to erode the right of law abiding citizens to carry weapons for self defense.  Criminals can always get weapons, to disarm the responsible citizen would be disastrous.  As for me, I will never give up my right to be armed. I believe millions of other Americans feel the same way.  There must be enforceable laws in place that screen applicants that want to legally carry.  As recent events have shown, it is not only the gun that kills, would they eliminate knives also.  There are bad people and there will always be bad people, to disarm the good would be a grievous mistake.
Alan J., Roan Mountain, TN

More deaths in the "free-kill zones" created by the laws barring lawful carry of concealed weapons. Those who break the law with impunity (and, it seems, immunity) know that no one can fight back in these areas.
C.M.N., Farmington Hills, MI

increased attacks on disarmed civilians
Allen F., Omaha, NE

Gun control laws are not the answer.  Laws don't stop crazy people or criminals.  However, we should treat criminals harder here in the US.  How many crimes are committed by repeat offenders?  If you commit a serious crime in this country you should pay a serious price.
William J., New York, NY

I am afraid that there will be more restrictions or control in gun laws in the aftermath of all these school shootings.
Edgar C., Syosset, NY

More bloodshed.
Tad W., Payson, UT

Further gun control laws will only reduce the ratio of bad guys and good guys.  Only the criminals will benefit from more gun laws.  Remember "Criminals Prefer Unarmed Victims"
Larry B., Lawrence, KS

There are no good outcomes after gun control laws are passed. The only way to control gun related crimes is to control the person committing the crime itself.
Vic S., Orofino, ID

More bad people shooting more good people.
C.R.W., Montgomery, AL

More shootings in 'controlled' areas.  Putting a tighter reign on the general public only makes the bad guy's job easier.
Roger B., Cheyenne, WY

The government will further usurp the rights of the people. There would be little to no change in violent crime, rapes or assaults.
David D., Navasota, TX

More crime, less safety.  Australia is a prime example.
Joe F., Freehold, NJ

We have to much as it is that only help bad guys.
Michael D., Forest Grove, OR

It will only weaken our system because only the lawful citizens will abide by it the mental cases and criminals will have free rein and use whatever they wish to accomplish their goals, guns, knives, explosives, poison, etc.
Billy B., Roswell, NM

They will only remove the guns from law abiding citizens.  There is a chance that eventually a small reduction in guns that are available for criminal's to purchase would be realized.
Steve C., Springdale, AR

Stricter laws without enforcement of existing laws
David M., Stoughton, MA

No change
James Z., Waukegan, IL

It will not have the desired effect. Guns need to be left in the hands of law abiding citizens
Mike B., Tulsa, OK

Gun control laws will put the honest person more at risk than before. Gun laws will not stop criminals from getting firearms, but will keep honest people from getting them for self defense.
T.C., Souderton, PA

Gun control works on the flawed assumption that criminals will obey the law.  The effect of gun control is to provide unarmed victims for armed criminals.  Guns are almost totally illegal in England, and that country, despite being an island, is now more dangerous than the worst sections of the worst cities in the US.
Bill L., Beaver, PA

more bad guys with guns, less law abiding citizens with guns
Jeff Y., Charlotte, NC

If by "further gun control laws" you mean laws that further limit the ability of law abiding citizens to obtain/carry firearms, I believe that such laws will serve to further disarm the general public and allow for criminals to threaten society without fear of an effective response from their victims.
David W., Orlando, FL

More crime
Tom W., Dallas, TX

criminals will always find a way to get a gun. you will only be taking away guns from the law abiding citizen.
Adam W., Morris, NY

gun controls will not work
Dale S., Fort Stockton, TX

More bloodshed will occur because the criminals know that the weak are unprotected since they cannot obtain or possess a firearm to protect their, or their loved ones lives.
Daniel B., Zanesville, OH

Rebellion
Rodney H., New Bern, NC

Gun control does not work. Illinois does not allow concealed carry and still this kid did as do so many criminals do. Gun control protects the criminals and not the good. People kill people not guns.
Vlatko R., Wayne, NJ

The more gun control laws the more gun crime. Gun crime is higher where there is gun control. Criminals are the only ones carrying guns in those areas.
Bruce G., King of Prussia, PA

the criminals will be the only ones with firearms
George H., Edison, NJ

More crime
James J., Douglassville, PA

Additional cost across the board to law abiding citizens without effective control & deterrent of the intended criminal/violent offenders.
Robert S., Tulsa, OK

The creation of more "game preserves for psychopaths who hunt humans."
Massad A., Live Oaks, FL

good citizens will be in danger and the criminals will rule the streets with no fear.
Steve C., Atwater, OH

Law abiding citizens will obey the laws and will be disarmed in "gun free zones", while criminals will continue to ignore the rules of society and continue to prey on the disarmed.
Patrick M., Chicopee, MA

Because the recent incident was apparently a licensed individual who purchased his guns legally it is likely anti-gunners will use that as fuel that all guns are bad and they should be confiscated.
Chris K., Pitman, NJ

Hate to think of where this will take us.
Lynn B., Ogden, UT

Only cops and criminals will be armed.
Ray H., Jackson, TN

Safe zones are simply victim zones;  more gun laws legislate criminal freedom
David D., Brookville, PA

They will most likely cause a increase in violent crime. Due to the fact that crimminals (at least in the past) show a distinct reluctance to obey laws.
Further gun control will however make it much more difficult for the most vulnerable to defend themselves. The old, physicly weak, etc.
Jay R., Portland, OR

Based on past hysterical solutions (more controls on the victims, more freedom for the criminals), there will be more deaths and more trauma.
Stephen H., Sarasota, FL

Most gun control laws only affect the law abiding citien. Criminals will always break the law!!!!
Joe E., Howell, NJ

Question Four:
What types of new legislation, if any, are desirable to help make schools and college campuses safer places?

NONE! There are enough laws on the books now.
Jack K., Medford, NJ

Allow any teachers and students that meet concealed carry requirements and want too. obtain a permit and carry on campuses.
Philip S., Borden, IN

Allow individuals who are trained, to care concealed weapons.
Keith H., Levittown, PA

Offenses committed on school and college campuses should be subject to enhanced penalties.
William M., Lakewood, WA

Allowing anyone who has a concealed weapons permit to carry their weapons on campus.
Ellen C., Peoria, AZ

Expand the right to carry a concealed weapon.
John D., Miami, FL

Follow the US CONSTITUTION and enforce the SECOND AMENDMENT!  No new legislation needed!
Dr. Stephen C., Battle Ground, WA

I'm not much of a political person, but I do think students with mental issues should be screened prior to be allowed weapon access.
Joel C., Ripon, CA

Resend the laws that create gun-free zones. Which are in reality "victim disarmament zones"
Fred A., Stuart, FL

We need to face up to the fact that if someone wants to harm you or whoever, they will by whatever means it takes. You cannot legislate this.
Joe T., Palm Bay, FL

1. Assure fully legal capability for meaningful background checks. (see first item in survey)
2. A state-wide approval for the same carry rights on a campus as exists the general public.
3. The realization that "gun-control" doesn't work and move to expand ownership, carry rights, and self-defense rights
Neal G., Lawrenceville, GA

Allow people with Concealed carry permits to carry on campus and in the classroom.
Ed H., Quincy, FL

A clear delineation of who is responsible for the individual's safety while on the grounds. If a "gun free zone" is declared, how will the school/college protect the individual?
Zoning laws that require new construction of schools to include a security assessment for a small range of possible hostage scenarios.
Lee D., Denver, CO

Allow concealed Carry
Jim R., Sicklerville, NJ

I think that anyone with the proper training and qualifications should be allowed to arm themselves for protection since it is impossible for the police to be everywhere at once, one armed teacher or student could have saved lives.
John F., Hazlet, NJ

Self defense classes should be mandatory on college campuses.
John C., Philadelphia, PA

1.  All gun owners (not individual guns) must have a gun permit, just as drivers are required to have a permit.
2.  Each purchase of a gun must be preceded by a completed background check.  Patients, including out-patients, being treated for mental illness including depression, must be reported to the appropriate gun permit-issuing authority which will suspend or revoke the gun permit and seize all guns within a prescribed timeframe.  The guns will be returned to the owner upon reissuance or reactivation of a gun permit.  Having access to a gun without a gun permit should be punishable with jail time.
3.  Terminate all gun sales at gun shows.
4.  Allow only licensed brokers or licensed dealers to sell guns.  See #3 above.  No private party gun sales.
5.  Permit willing college/school faculty and staff to carry concealed weapons providing they have obtained the appropriate license or permit for their state.
6.  Reduce the amount and level of violence in all media.
Denny F., Chandler, AZ

None.
Joseph V., Aldan, PA

Public schools should conform to concealed carry laws
Jack P., South Jordan, UT

More budget to the law enforcement system with a mandate to focus on this type of violence and situation.  More budget to the states/counties/cities/towns for schools to implement programs to better teach and protect their students.  More money to help Federal/statement implementation of programs such as "School Marshals" and rapid reaction teams, as well as sensors and just plain common security measures.
Reggie S., Front Royal, VA

I know of no legislation that would be of significance.  Any that may be passed would  be so FUBAR'ed by the politico's and bureaucrats as to be of little use.
Lynne S., Paducah, KY

Allow permitted teachers and student to carry a cw. This solution does not require one to have a PHD!
Sam S., Ponca City, OK

Take away "Gun-free Zones" and permit lawfully licensed and trained students, faculty, and staff carry to concealed weapons.
A.R. "Mac" M., Gainesville, GA

In Utah, we are a right to carry state and we have one university that is right to carry as well. I feel safe here but I still carry and do so because of my right and my obligation to my family to keep them safe from people who want to take my personal rights away.
Lance P., Orem, UT

give students and teachers the right to carry in colleges and universities.
Craig G., Trenton, NJ

Allow registration of weapons for carry, if student is over 18. They should be required to pass a safety course and have training in their use. Also background check should be required to carry.
Nick G., Tavares, FL

Stop making them "free-zones." The only freedom right now is for the criminal element
Ray H., Jackson, TN

Make it easier for people to carry concealed.
Kurt G., Pemberton, NJ

To stop colleges from INFRINGING on our 2nd amendment rights
David R., Coeur d'Alene, ID

I work in the school district. I am in the schools everyday. To make theses facilities safer we need to have more than one armed person on campus. If you were to arm those of the faculty who wanted to be and they were of sound mind I would hope people would feel safer. Those who intended to do harm to others would think twice.
Thaddeus Z., Edgewater Park, NJ

We have all the laws that we need. We have the people to enforce them. Colleges have security. Back round checks on certain students and others could be a tell.
Eric J., Scottsdale, AZ

None.
Daniel G., Fallon, NV

Armed security / campus police patrols
Randy M., Kentwood, MI

This answer is for all. We need to be able to carry concealed weapons or (not concealed) whenever and where ever we want to. (With the proper credentials of course.) Lets face it, the people committing crimes with guns are mostly non-registered users with illegal possession and illegal guns. These sicko's might think twice about pulling a gun out knowing that there could be 5 people within 10 feet of them who are all carrying legal registered weapons and are professionally trained to use them.
Bernard S., Pittstown, NJ

Federal legislation allowing nationwide concealed carry by any adult not a criminal or mental problem as long as a safety course is completed successfully.
Frank M., Cedar Falls, IA

Put discipline back into our schools.  I taught high school for 14 years and the main reason I quit was the lack of discipline.  Teachers are very restricted as is the school system in what they can do to discipline the unruly.  We need to set up alternate schools, manned by retired military, (this would be a great use for some of the closed military bases) that violent behavior students can be sent to.  Then allow the military to correct without legal interference from those that would restrict the use of physical means to correct behavior.  These schools would be used for the student that was beyond help by the local authority and it would be a last ditch measure to turn the student around before they become a criminal.  Parents would sign a release basically saying:  Please fix my child before they self destruct.
Alan J., Roan Mountain, TN

The repeal of laws barring lawful carry of concealed weapons on campuses.
C.M.N., Farmington Hills, MI

Campus carry, Castle doctrine.
Allen F., Omaha, NE

Better concealed carry laws.
William J., New York, NY

We need new legislations that will require schools, colleges and universities for more armed security officers in plainclothes in every building; require properly secured and concealed weapon in the school and accessed by properly trained faculties.
Edgar C., Syosset, NY

Make laws that prevent any school or campus from restricting the carrying of weapons by permit holders.
Tad W., Payson, UT

The only feasible way to make schools safer, aside from a metal detector at every entrance, would be less stringent gun control laws and allowing staff and teachers to carry and give glasses for them on the subject.  Maybe someday make it a requirement to have the good guys (teachers, staff) carry and let the bad guys see what will happen to them if consider something horrible like a school shooting.
Larry B., Lawrence, KS

I don't know, as I am not a legislator. I think that all people need to be educated on mental health and how to recognize  when symptoms of poor mental health start to appear. Depression seems to cause some of random shooting sprees, and can be thwarted if people come forward and notify authorities beforehand.
Vic S., Orofino, ID

Laws requiring a set percentage of faculty to receive training and carry concealed.
C.R.W., Montgomery, AL

The type of legislation that allows the public to protect itself.  We already have legislation that says no agency is liable for our protection, so let us protect ourselves without fear of prosecution for doing so.
Roger B., Cheyenne, WY

None. Keep legislation out of our campuses.
David D., Navasota, TX

Overturn bans on CCW where they exist
Joe F., Freehold, NJ

We have to much as it is that only help bad guys.
Michael D., Forest Grove, OR

Allow concealed and /or open carry on campus. This might allow the psychopaths to be removed prior to significant lose of life.  It is possible that it might even act as a deterrent.
Steve C., Springdale, AR

Allow concealed carry by qualified personnel
David M., Stoughton, MA

Concealed Carry on campus
James Z., Waukegan, IL

The only solution to an armed offense is an armed defense.
Mike B., Tulsa, OK

None!!!
T.C., Souderton, PA

1)  Provide for nondiscriminatory issuance of concealed handgun licenses in all 50 states, with nationwide reciprocity.
2)  Significantly reduce or eliminate the number of places where guns cannot be legally carried.  Specifically, remove schools from the list of places where licenses are not valid.
3)  Preempt any school policies prohibiting weapons on the school grounds.
4)  Reduce the minimum age for obtaining a concealed handgun license to 16.
Bill L., Beaver, PA

more ccw laws
Jeff Y., Charlotte, NC

Reduce or completely eliminate so called "gun free zones".  Push for "must issue CCW" legislation in those states that currently don't have it.  Push for "Castle doctrine" legislation in those states that currently don't have it.
David W., Orlando, FL

change state laws allowing the carrying of a firearm with a license to carry
Tom W., Dallas, TX

make any unauthorized gun found on a person or used in a crime on school property a felony with a long jail sentence.
Adam W., Morris, NY

None.
Dale S., Fort Stockton, TX

Right to carry laws.
Daniel B., Zanesville, OH

We don't need new laws just enforce the ones we already have
Rodney H., New Bern, NC

They should pass a federal law to allow people to carry weapons on campuses so people can protect themselves. Gun control makes people easier pray for criminals not just in schools but everywhere. Its easy to talk about gun control when you have somebody armed protecting you like do the Clinton's or the Kennedy's. It is our God given right to protect ourselves not the right of a corrupt politician to deny that right
Vlatko R., Wayne, NJ

As stated above, legislation to allow qualified persons to carry. A potential criminal will think about the possibility of people carrying concealed and this might reduce the possibility of it happening.
Bruce G., King of Prussia, PA

Easier concealed carry laws.
James J., Douglassville, PA

We need to avoid adding new laws, since our society seems not to be able to enforce those currently on the books.
Robert S., Tulsa, OK

Rescinding of prohibition against reasonable self-protection.
Massad A., Live Oaks, FL

make parents more responsible for there children's actions. keep the government out of our homes so parents can discipline children (within reason) and teach them good values and respect
Steve C., Atwater, OH

Enforce the laws already on the books, new laws are not needed, and will usually conflict with existing laws.
Patrick M., Chicopee, MA

Allow legally armed citizens to carry on campus.  Initiate visible identification for all students.
Chris K., Pitman, NJ

Allow teachers to get their permits and carry.
Ray H., Jackson, TN

National right to carry law;  no more safe zones (keep the criminal guessing); make schools more liable for protection and for establishing "safe zones"
David D., Brookville, PA

Outside of what I already mentioned. I don't know. I have no brilliant ideas. I never went to collage. (of course until I saw "Animal House" I didn't realize I'd missed anything)
Teaching personal responsibility, and rules that are actualy enforced, before anti social behavior gets to such a serious point, would be a fairly good plan. However this could damage childrens "self-esteem" and/or "Individual development" OK I'm through trying to be a comedian. I really just don't know.
Jay R., Portland, OR

1.  Remove restrictions on concealed weapons holders.
2.  Make those who do not allow concealed weapons holders to carry on their premises (including governments) responsible for whateve happens there.
3.  Require signage at any location that bans concealed weapons holders from carrying there, including government buildings/facilities (i.e., advertise "killing zones") and standardize signage for nyone who welcomes concealed carry holders to their location.
Stephen H., Sarasota, FL

All States should become "shall issue" with NO gun free zones.
Joe E., Howell, NJ
